Are your banks sharing a licence?

The FSCS protects £120,000 per person per banking licence, not per brand. Halifax and Bank of Scotland, for one, share a single limit.

Add your accounts and we'll show which ones share a limit, and how much is over it.

Your savings

Add each cash account: the bank or app, and how much is in it. Leave out stocks and shares, which have separate protection.

How FSCS protection works

If a UK bank, building society or credit union fails, the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) pays back up to £120,000 per person. The limit is per banking licence, not per brand or per account, and interest you've earned counts towards it.

Many brands are part of the same bank. Halifax is a trading name of Bank of Scotland plc, for example, so money at Halifax and at Bank of Scotland counts towards one £120,000 limit.

Joint accounts
Each holder has their own limit, so a joint account is covered up to £240,000 when neither of you holds anything else at that bank.
Savings apps and platforms
Apps such as Moneybox, Plum and Tembo hold your cash at partner banks. Protection applies at each partner bank, together with anything you hold there directly.
NS&I
Backed by HM Treasury rather than the FSCS, with no limit.
Large one-off payments
After certain life events, such as selling your home, the FSCS protects up to £1,400,000 for up to 6 months.

Stocks and shares have separate FSCS investment protection if a firm fails. It doesn't cover falls in value. For the full rules, see the FSCS website.

Questions

How much does the FSCS protect?

Up to £120,000 per person, per banking licence, if a UK bank, building society or credit union fails. In a joint account, each holder has their own £120,000 limit.

Is FSCS protection per bank or per brand?

Per banking licence. Brands on the same licence share one limit: Halifax and Bank of Scotland are both Bank of Scotland plc, for example, and first direct and M&S Bank are both HSBC UK Bank plc.

Does interest count towards the limit?

Yes. The limit covers your balance plus any interest you have earned up to the day the bank fails.

Are savings apps like Moneybox, Plum and Tembo protected?

They aren't banks: they hold your cash at partner banks. If a partner bank fails, the FSCS protects your money there up to £120,000, counted together with anything you hold at that bank directly. Your app should show which banks hold your money.

Is NS&I covered by the FSCS?

It doesn't need to be. NS&I is backed by HM Treasury, so all the money you hold there is secure, with no limit.

What if I hold a large amount for a short time?

After certain life events, such as selling your home, an inheritance or an insurance payout, the FSCS protects up to £1,400,000 for up to 6 months. The FSCS website lists which events qualify.
